Texas Longhorns’ win over the Ole Miss Rebels comes with a major loss following injury update on key starter
The Texas Longhorns took care of business against the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday night. Then came Sunday afternoon’s news, and it changes the outlook for an offense that was already searching for consistency.
The Texas Longhorns picked up a massive win over the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday night. Unfortunately, that win came with a serious cost. Star left tackle Trevor Goosby went down with a knee injury during the game, was carted off, and did not return.
Texas still found a way to get the job done without him. The question was how long the Longhorns would have to keep doing that, and on Sunday afternoon, we got the answer. Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, That Texas star left tackle Trevor Gooseby will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury against Ole Miss on Saturday.
A devastating turn for Trevor Goosby
This is horrible news, first and foremost, for Goosby himself. He came to Austin as a 3-star recruit and turned himself into a top-10 NFL draft prospect. Before this injury, there was a good chance he was going to be the first offensive tackle off the board in April.
Now those questions about his future are very much up in the air. That is a tough pill to swallow for a player who put in the work to climb that far, and it is a reminder of how quickly things can change in this sport.
Why this is a major loss for Texas
For Texas, this hurts in a big way. Yes, the Longhorns beat Ole Miss, but the performance was far from perfect. The run game without Hollywood Smothers was up and down, and Arch Manning was again up and down at times.
Now you take your left tackle out of that equation. On top of the inconsistency, Texas still has a lot of big games left on the schedule, and the stakes only get higher if the Longhorns make it to the College Football Playoff and beyond.
To be fair, this is where the one-game-at-a-time approach matters. The next-man-up mentality will get tested, and the coaching staff has to figure out a way to keep winning without its anchor on the left side of the line.
I think there is a real argument that Texas just lost its best offensive player. Let’s be real here. Given how Manning has played, how Cam Coleman has played, and the losses in the backfield, Goosby was the steady piece of this offense. Protecting the quarterback’s blind side was one area Texas did not have to worry about.
That is no longer the case. This is a major blow for the Longhorns, and how they respond up front will go a long way in determining whether this season ends the way they hoped it would when it started.
