Dallas Cowboys DC Christian Parker speaks on controversial sideline exchange with rookie, sends a strong message about player’s future
The Dallas Cowboys got their first viral sideline moment of the season, and defensive coordinator Christian Parker had to field questions about it Thursday.
NFL sideline exchanges can go viral extremely quickly with a lack of context. Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker was reminded of it as WFAA cameras caught a moment from the Week 1 loss to the New York Giants that immediately raised controversy among fans, media members, and content creators.
In the clip, which you can watch below, Parker is seen talking to Cowboys rookie LB Jaishawn Barham. The latter gets up and walks away from Parker mid-conversation while visibly frustrated.
Parker explains Cowboys’ viral sideline moment
“I think he was frustrated,” Parker told reporters on Thursday via The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “It was his first NFL game. Things aren’t going to be perfect. This isn’t a fairytale at all. Jaishawn cares as much as anybody in that locker room about us winning, No. 1, but No. 2 our defensive performance.”
Parker’s explanation shouldn’t be a surprise. At the time, the Giants were dragging the Cowboys defense up and down the field in a shocking performance. Moment slike the above, though not always caught by cameras, are commonplace in the NFL.
While Parker described Barham’s frustration, it remains unclear what happened in the captured moment. Did Barham walk away from feedback or from a pep talk? That’s the biggest question mark, as the former would be much worse than the latter. You want players to be coachable even in the heat of the moment.
However, Parker isn’t worried. It sure feels like Cowboys fans shouldn’t, either.
“He was a little frustrated with himself and frustrated with our side of the ball (with how) we played,” Parker said. “We don’t have any reservations about his mentality. We welcome that passion. Have to channel it better. That’s something that young players have to go through. It’s a natural progression.”
Parker sends a strong message about Barham’s future
Despite the online concerns about the exchange, Parker is bullish on what’s ahead for Barham. And he believes his expectations are shared by the entire organization.
“I don’t think anyone in our building has any doubt about what he’s gonna do coming real soon,” Parker said. “We got a lot of confidence in Jaishawn.”
The Cowboys urgently need the confidence to pay off. With DeMarvion Overshown out (hamstirng) against the Washington Commanders, Barham appears in line to start at middle linebacker.
It’s a lot of responsibility for a rookie still adapting to the NFL (as seen in Week 1), so he will be forced to be locked in this Sunday. It may be an unfair ask for the third-round pick, but that’s how it goes in the NFL.
Hopefully, Barham learned from his debut. On-field and off-field wise.
