The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back a familiar face at cornerback.

CB Melvin Smith Jr. will return to Kansas City. The second-year CB spent the 2025 season on the Chiefs’ practice squad before being released during this year’s 53-man roster cuts. He is returning to Kansas City after a brief detour through Tennessee. NFL reporter Aaron Wilson first reported the news on Tuesday. Expect Smith Jr. to rejoin the team before practice resumes on Wednesday.

The reunion comes at a critical time for the Chiefs, who are awaiting imaging results on rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane’s shoulder following the team’s Week 1 win over the Denver Broncos. The Tennessee Titans claimed Smith Jr. off waivers after Kansas City released him during final roster cuts. The Titans waived him shortly after, and he cleared waivers to become an unrestricted free agent late last week. That opened the door for his return to the Chiefs.

Smith Jr. proved his value throughout the offseason

Listed at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Smith Jr. originally joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Division II Southern Arkansas. He spent the majority of the 2025 NFL season on the practice squad in Kansas City and used this offseason to take a significant step forward, often working with the starting cornerback group during organized team activities and training camp.

Smith Jr. filled in as a starter opposite CB Nohl Williams when the team practiced without both Delane and CB L’Jarius Sneed. That was during both training camp and Week 1 of the 2026 NFL preseason. A rib injury suffered in Week 3 of the preseason stifled Smith’s final chance to make a lasting impression. It ultimately came down to a numbers decision, and the Chiefs hoped to get Smith Jr. back on the practice squad. That plan didn’t work when the Titans swooped in on waivers, but the end result is the same.

Delane’s shoulder injury adds urgency to the move

The timing of Smith Jr.’s return coincides with uncertainty surrounding the Chiefs’ No. 6 overall pick. Delane had a strong debut against Denver, but he injured his shoulder on his interception and was ruled out for the remainder of the game. He underwent both X-ray and MRI imaging on Tuesday, Sept. 15, to determine the severity of the injury.

Delane has been dealing with what has now been revealed as a hairline fracture in his scapula, which caused him to miss mandatory minicamp and part of training camp. The Chiefs hope the injury is not a re-aggravation of that fracture, but rather a shoulder sprain. The medical testing will reveal the severity and whether Delane will need to miss time.

The timing of the signing might raise eyebrows. However, it isn’t a significant indicator of Delane’s future availability. Smith Jr. is a player the Chiefs always wanted back on the practice squad. They believe he can provide key depth on both special teams and the defensive side of the ball throughout the 2026 NFL season and potentially beyond.

What’s next for the Chiefs’ practice squad?

The corresponding roster move on the practice squad has not yet been announced. With players like Kader Kohou and D’Arco Perkins-McAllister already occupying spots, it’s worth questioning what they’ll do. Will Kansas City replace a defensive back with another defensive back to make room for Smith? For now, the Chiefs have their man back. And the secondary has another capable body at a position where depth has proven essential.
