The Kansas City Chiefs await MRI results on CB Mansoor Delane after X-rays came back negative on his shoulder injury, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Kansas City Chiefs fans woke up to a positive injury update on rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane. The No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft exited his NFL debut after just three defensive snaps due to injury.
Delane recorded an interception on his third professional snap. However, he banged his shoulder on the play and suffered a shoulder injury. He was initially deemed questionable to return to the game, then went back to the locker room immediately for further examination by the team’s medical staff. Delane was ruled out at halftime with the shoulder injury.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s post-game update was brief, saying the team had more testing to do.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo, Delane underwent an MRI on his shoulder today. He had X-rays last night that confirmed the shoulder was stable.
“Do you remember there was a one year where the guy was waiting out for the iPhone? He’s the first guy in line, and the news cameras were there, and he opened up the box. He was so excited, and the phone came flying out. He drops it, and the thing cracks the screen. That was an amazing moment there. A little bit like what happened with Mansoor Delane last night. Gets that interception right off the bat, and you go, ‘Oh, okay, this is why they drafted him so high. This is why they put so many of the eggs in the basket.’ They let their two corners go to the Rams because they felt good about Mansoor Delane, who they thought they would get in the draft. There’s the interception. Then he leaves with a shoulder injury, and he doesn’t come back. Look, I woke up to a bunch of texts about this. Some optimistic, some a little bit more guarded. The hope here, from my understanding, is that this is going to be a sprain. But they don’t know until they get the MRI. Sprains are extremely painful, from my understanding. There was some numbness for him as well, but the MRI today will tell the full story. He’s going to get that, and we’ll have the update as soon as we can.”

The initial concern was that Delane had suffered the same injury that kept him out during the spring, missing mandatory minicamp and part of training camp with what was described as a shoulder blade injury. Testing so far seems to confirm it isn’t as serious as that injury. However, the Chiefs still need the MRI results to learn more about the extent of the damage.
What this means for the Chiefs defense
The good news here is that X-rays confirmed the shoulder is stable, which should ease some of the panic among Chiefs fans. Delane flashed his potential in a major way with that interception on just his third professional snap. Making a play like that so early in his career is a good sign for what Kansas City is getting out of the No. 6 pick long-term.
The big thing to remember is that the Chiefs invested significant draft capital to move up and select Delane for a reason. They paired him with a Steve Spagnuolo defense that needed a young, talented cornerback. Losing him for any extended stretch would hurt the secondary, especially since the Chiefs are already thin at the position. Kristian Fulton filled in nicely in Week 1.
For now, Kansas City will wait on the MRI results before determining Delane’s availability for Week 2 and beyond. Early signs point to something less severe than the shoulder blade injury that sidelined him this spring, but the Chiefs will want to be careful with their prized rookie. More information should be available in the coming days as testing wraps up.
