More clues emerge on what finally pushed the Dolphins to make a change atop their football operation — and why timing mattered most

The NFL’s annual trade deadline is sparing no expense. The AFC East has been dramatically shaken, power moves are being made across the league, and, at this point, we aren’t done yet.
The Miami Dolphins got a jump on the rest of the league action, thanks in part to an early Thursday night contest in Week 9, then a subsequent parting with former general manager Chris Grier.
Interim general manager Champ Kelly is leading the effort now. And thanks to one of Miami’s longest tenured beat reporters, we now know one of the final straws that seems to have pushed team owner Stephen Ross into making a change in his football operation ahead of the 2025 trade deadline.
Dave Hyde suggests passiveness was the final straw for Chris Grier in Miami
“The only surprise was what I was told why it happened, which was (team owner) Steve Ross wanted some answers of what they were going to do at the trade deadline, and Chris (Grier) hadn’t made calls, and his idea was “let people call him”. And I think, at 2-7, Ross wanted someone to be a little more proactive in there. And so that was the final straw, that obviously wasn’t the reason he was fired. It was the last thing that happened to push Ross over the edge.”

Miami Dolphins who could be traded on Tuesday
- Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick
- EDGE defender Bradley Chubb
- Cornerback Rasul Douglas
Ouch. It’s a little too on the nose for Grier’s reputation as an executive, which has been to defer to the direction of the team to his head coach’s liking. That has bitten Miami at every turn of this organization’s build under Grier’s direction. But now, thanks to an intervention that prompted a change at general manager ahead of the trade deadline, the Dolphins have avoided Grier deferring their deadline action to the whims of offers made by other executives who picked up the phone first.
Whether the value found in trades ends up being good or not? Well, that’s for time to tell and more deals to (hopefully) be made. But regardless of what else does or doesn’t come down the pipe before the trade deadline, Dolphins fans can know now that there’s a more proactive effort being made to maximize the unfortunate circumstances Miami finds itself in this season.
Here’s to it leading to a better tomorrow. Starting today.
