Tennessee Titans coach Robert Saleh announced Friday morning that rookie linebacker Anthony Hill will take over as the starting Mike linebacker in Week 2, a move that accelerates the second-round pick’s timeline and raises real questions about veteran Cody Barton’s role in Nashville.

Hill, the athletic Texas product selected in the 2nd Round of this year’s draft, earned the promotion after a Week 1 performance that made him the lone bright spot on an otherwise rough afternoon for the Titans defense.

Hill’s path to the starting lineup was traveled faster than anyone anticipated, and not entirely by design! The Titans were forced to play their rookie in Week 1 after veteran LB Cedric Gray got into a UTV accident over Labor Day weekend and was placed into concussion protocol.

Gray could not clear the protocol in time for the opener, which shuffled the entire linebacker room. Barton, who had been Tennessee’s exclusive Mike linebacker since arriving at the beginning of the 2025 season, slid over to Will in a pinch to accommodate Hill stepping in at Mike.

Barton explained to me in the locker room this week that playing Will was a pretty new experience for him. Almost his entire career has been spent at Mike, with the exception of a brief stint in Seattle. Otherwise, it’s been all Mike for Barton. He wasn’t a liability on tape,  he was just largely a non-factor.

Now Barton faces something else that’s recently unfamiliar: coming off the bench. If Hill has already earned the full-time job this early, that’s a swift ascendancy for a player the Titans were initially planning to ease into the lineup.

The messaging shifted late in camp

Early in the offseason, the messaging from the Titans was clear. They would take their time with Hill, they would not put him in there until they were sure he was ready. Barton’s understanding of the Robert Saleh defense, his communication ability, and his veteran savvy would keep him safe in that job. But in the back half of training camp, that understanding started to shift… the messaging changed, and there was reason to start preparing for the possibility that this transition could happen quickly.

The Cedric Gray accident was a stroke of luck for Hill and a stroke of bad luck for Barton, because it forced the rookie onto the field sooner than the Titans were anticipating.

Hill met the moment. 

In a winners and losers article immediately following the game, finding the 1 winner was almost as easy as identifying the 16 losers. Hill was the only player on the field who left you thinking, hey, the Titans might have somebody at linebacker! He showed off his athleticism, handled his responsibilities as the green dot communicator well enough to give the coaching staff confidence, and looked like a step up over the veteran he was drafted to replace. It’s just happening earlier than expected.

What happens to Barton now?

The question becomes whether Barton will be the third linebacker off the bench, and in what capacity. Does he come in as part of the base 4-3 defense? Or does he serve strictly as Hill’s backup at Mike, only entering when the rookie is banged up or needs a breather? There’s also James Williams to consider. Williams is currently dealing with an elbow issue and wore a yellow non-contact jersey this week, but once he’s healthy, the Titans will have to decide which of those two is the base defense’s third linebacker. My guess is that it’s Barton…? But I’m honestly unsure.

And whatever that role is, will Barton be satisfied in that role? He has been one of the best guys to talk to ever since he came to Nashville, and he’s a team player through and through. But he’s at a veteran stage of his career where it wouldn’t be surprising if a bench role isn’t really what he wants to be doing. There’s no telling whether he’ll want to be around much longer in Tennessee if the Hill transition becomes permanent.

I would not be surprised if Barton’s time as an impact player for the Titans is at an end here. That’s something to watch over the coming weeks.

The bottom line is this: it’s good news for the team, and good news for Titans fans, that their second-round pick from this year’s draft has already proven himself enough to accelerate his timeline and earn the starting green dot Mike linebacker job in Week 2. The process worked faster than planned, but the result is exactly what Tennessee drafted him to become.
