The Miami Hurricanes solved their quarterback situation on Friday when they secured the services of former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck through the transfer portal.
While some panned the move as Miami obtaining just a mediocre quarterback, it appears that interest from two of the biggest names in college football proved that was not the case.
According to USA Today college football writer Matt Hayes, both Georgia and Alabama reached out to Beck before he committed to Miami.
Hayes notes that the first team and coach to reach out to Beck after his decision to enter the transfer portal was announced was his most recent one – Georgia's Kirby Smart. The other school to reach out was allegedly Alabama.
That's honestly not surprising, given what each school has coming down the pike. Georgia's Gunner Stockton was ineffective in his time spelling Beck and was a clear downgrade at the position. The options behind him have no experience. And it's hard to ignore that Georgia went 24-3 as a starter with Beck under center.
Alabama is also surely looking for an experienced option with Jalen Milroe heading off to the NFL. They have unproven players with upside in Ty Simpson and 2025 signee Keelon Russell, but Beck is by far a more polished and ready option for a coach who's feeling the pressure to win quickly after a down first year in Tuscaloosa.
Their loss is Miami's gain, as Beck's arrival will help soften the blow of losing Cam Ward, who shattered program records on the way to becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist. Mario Cristobal mentioned on Monday that he believes Beck – who underwent surgery last month to repair an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow – will be ready to throw by the summer. Cristobal said he has hopes for the spring, but that he doesn't have a timetable that would back that up.
Regardless, the Canes will have their guy ready and under center on the Greentree Practice Field by the time August rolls around. Someone it sounds like many other programs would love to have on their campuses instead.
