While most of Ohio State’s focus is on beating Tennessee on Saturday, they have to put some of their attention on the transfer portal.
Ohio State has players leaving and they need to bring players in. Offensive line is the most important position that Ohio State needs to address. They just received a big-time early Christmas gift you could say, one they badly needed.
First reported by Pete Nakos of On3, the Buckeyes have received a commitment from Minnesota transfer Phillip Daniels. Daniels was one of the top offensive tackles in the recruiting portal and now he is set to be a Buckeye.
Daniels was an Ohio kid and came out of Cincinnati in the class of 2023. The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Daniels had 22 offers coming out of high school, but most were middle-of-the-pack schools. Ohio State was familiar with Daniels from his days at Princeton High School.
The Buckeyes lost left tackle Josh Simmons earlier in the season against Oregon and he has already announced that he will enter the NFL draft. Additionally, right tackle Josh Fryar is a senior. The depth of the edge of the offensive line is not strong, which is why we see Donovan Jackson now at left tackle from left guard.
Ohio State has already missed on one offensive line target, so getting Daniels was that much more important.
Daniels took a redshirt season last year with Minnesota but has played 300 snaps this season, including starting the last four games. Daniels was expected to be a starter on Day 1 next season for Minnesota. There will be three years of eligibility left for Daniels.
Ohio State still needs to add another offensive lineman or too, but they needed to get the first one out of the way. Seth McLaughlin and Simmons are two recent transfers that have worked out for offensive line coach Justin Frye. The Buckeyes show that they see potential in Daniels too by making this move.
A key pickup for Ohio State with a player who very well could be starting for them next season.
