Brent Venables finally opens up about the one topic the entire country is dying to hear about from him
Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners have a current ongoing investigation with John Mateer and Venmo-gate.
There has been a lot of buzz around the Oklahoma Sooners, Brent Venables, and quarterback John Mateer as of late. Most of it has been good buzz – this team and offense look really good in fall camp. Some of it has been bad – a potential gambling scandal.
Well, that’s what everyone has been trying to make it out to be. And, I get it, I really do; in today’s era of college football and just sports in general, sports gambling is so big. And, the last thing you want a player doing is throwing a game. So, there is a good reason as to why everyone was trying to make it a bigger deal than it truly is.
This is no scandal; this was just an 18-year-old John Mateer using Venmo with his friends, and putting a caption as an inside joke – at least that’s what he’s saying, and that’s what the Sooners are believing. They’ve done their due diligence on the matter.
Sooners HC Brent Venables talks John Mateer and Venmo-gate
It’s been a few days since the news broke, and we know that the Oklahoma Sooners said they would do an in-house investigation. Not to mention, John Mateer himself has since released a statement.
All that was left was to hear from Brent Venables himself on the matter.
“In his mind, there was nothing to be seen here,” Brent Venables said on Friday to reporters who were on-site. “Thankful for the powers that be that got us to a really good place quickly. But he’s a light-hearted guy. He’s focused and serious when he needs to. I think he recognizes — he’d be the first one to tell you the enormity of maybe what the implications could have been had he not followed the NCAA rules years ago or whatever. Again, I don’t want to — he’s moved on quickly.”
The Oklahoma Sooners are preparing for the biggest and most pressure-filled type of season they have had under Brent Venables. The last thing they need, or any program for that matter, is their star quarterback being suspended for gambling.
So, you have to find some solace in what Venables had to say regarding the situation. If he feels good about it, fans should, too.
