Notre Dame football attempting to shock both the recruiting world and the Ohio State fanbase with latest news for the USC matchup
Notre Dame received some massive recruiting news heading into their USC matchup. Ohio State fans won’t like it.
Very early in the 2027 recruiting process, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame program gravitated towards elite Dayton (Ohio) Wayne wide receiver Jamier Averette-Brown. Coming from the same high school that produced both Freeman and secondary coach Mike Mickens, the Fighting Irish pushed for Averette-Brown early on. Unfortunately, the Ohio native decided to make an early commitment to the in-state Buckeyes. That felt like the end of Notre Dame’s chances.
Despite the odds being tilted against them, Freeman’s staff has not let up on their pursuit of Averette-Brown. It was reported by Blue and Gold Illustrated recruiting insider Kyle Kelly that the talented pass catcher is going to be heading to South Bend this weekend for their game against the USC Trojans.
“I have a good relationship with Coach Freeman and the coaches,” Averette-Brown told Kelly. “So, it’s always nice to be able to catch up with them.”
Heading into the game, Notre Dame making a legitimate push for Averette-Brown is highly unlikely. It is a great sign to even get him on campus, so anything can happen. At the end of the day, however, Averette-Brown has Ohio State tattooed on his arm, and they are an in-state program that he has been a fan of for a very long time. Perhaps seeing the improved Irish passing attack will help, but the odds are stacked against them right now.
Jamier Brown recruiting breakdown
Brown is considered to be an elite player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports ranking, Brown currently sits as a five-star player. He is pegged as the No. 6 overall player, the No. 1 wide receiver, and the No. 1 player from the state of Ohio for the 2027 recruiting class. There is a legitimate argument that Brown could be the most dynamic overall player in the class.
Outside of the Buckeyes and the Fighting Irish, Brown holds an extremely impressive offer list. Some of the top programs that have offered the Ohio native include Oregon, Michigan, Tennessee, Penn State, Miami, Texas A&M, Auburn, Indiana, Nebraska, Missouri, Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt, and Purdue, among several others.
Brown is a dynamic weapon for Wayne High School. As a sophomore in 2024, the 5-11, 170-pound pass catcher managed to haul in 63 receptions for 1,035 yards and 13 touchdowns, an average of 16.4 yards per reception. The Ohio native also carries the football 13 times for 167 yards and another score, while also returning a punt for a touchdown.
