Head coach Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame football put together a nice showing this past weekend against Navy, defeating the Midshipmen by a score of 49 to 10. Not only did the Fighting Irish perform well on the field, but both the recruiting and coaching staff also created a lot of momentum in recruiting. It was a big visit weekend and a talented group of targets left South Bend with high opinions of the program.

Arguably the top overall player on campus was elite 2027 Raleigh (N.C.) Cardinal Gibbons cornerback Xavier Hasan. Heading into the trip, the North Carolina star already had a high opinion of the Irish program. This visit was about continuing that momentum, and hopefully trying to close the deal. While a timeline hasn’t been made public as of now, it appears that Notre Dame has continued to position themselves very well.

The visit went so well that Steve Wiltfong, who is the vice president of recruiting at Rivals, has logged an expert prediction for Hasan to land with the Irish. It would be yet another monumental victory for secondary coach Mike Mickens on the recruiting trail if he were able to close the deal.

Xavier Hasan’s recruiting background

Hasan is considered to be a Top-100 caliber recruit by multiple major recruiting platforms right now. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Hasan currently ranks as the No. 36 overall player, the No. 3 cornerback, and the No. 1 player from the state of North Carolina for the 2027 recruiting class. Those rankings are enough to get everyone excited.

If the Irish did land Hasan, it would be another huge grab from the Tar Heel State. Notre Dame has had a ton of luck in North Carolina recently, including landing names such as Bryce Young, Micah Gilbert, Jack Larsen, Rodney Dunham, and Ebenezer Ewetade, among several others. Hasan would have a strong argument as the most talented player in that group.

The 6-0, 180-pound cornerback is not short of options to play on the college level currently. His offer list is about as strong as you will find in the 2027 recruiting class overall. Some of the top programs that have offered Hasan include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Florida, Ole Miss, Penn State, Miami, Florida State, Nebraska, Auburn, Louisville, NC State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, South Carolina, Arkansas, Michigan State, UNC, Indiana, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Virginia, Wake Forest, Wisconsin, UCLA, and SMU, among others.

In 10 games as a junior, opposing offenses have done whatever they can to steer clear of Hasan. He has recorded just 11 total tackles and three interceptions so far this season. Hasan does also handle kickoff and punt return duties for the team, having returned two for touchdowns already.

That’s fresh off a sophomore year where Hasan intercepted seven passes and broke up another eight, and it appears opponents have learned from their 2024 mistakes for the most part.
