Positive Matt Patricia development comes about for Ohio State football, and it should bring a sigh of relief to Buckeye Nation
The Ohio State defensive coordinator is busy on the road for the Buckeyes.
Ryan Day has a big task on his hands with finding the next offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Brian Hartline’s departure from the program left a hole at wide receivers coach and offensive play-caller. Ohio State has already brought in Cortez Hankton from the LSU Tigers to be the wide receivers coach. A decision on the offensive coordinator position still awaits.
The Matt Patricia worry looks to be moving off the table for Ohio State
Following the season, the other worry was that Ohio State could be replacing its defensive coordinator as well for a second year in a row. Day’s decision to go to the NFL and get Patricia was the perfect decision after Jim Knowles departed for Penn State. Patricia is likely to receive a contract extension before long, as long as he doesn’t leave for the NFL.
Recent signs point toward Patricia remaining a part of the Buckeyes. Patricia was on the road in Virginia on Wednesday, visiting 2027 Ohio State commitment OT Brody McNeel.
A day later, Patricia and Day are in Connecticut on Thursday, visiting four-star EDGE target Mekai Brown. Brown is the No. 6 EDGE in the class of 2027, per 247 Sports Composite.
Patricia being on the road recruiting for the Buckeyes after the transfer portal closing is good news. The veteran coach could be a target for NFL defensive coordinator jobs, with 10 head coaching changes. But it’s looking like Patricia is going to stay in place for another season.
Ohio State keeping Patricia for more than one year is a win, as 2025 was a big success for the defense. Patricia coaching the defense again in 2026 after losing players like Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles, Arvell Reese, and Kayden McDonald is a win on its own.
Nothing is official yet, but the growing feeling is that Patricia will be in Columbus again in the fall of 2026. That’d be a major offseason win for the scarlet and grey.
