Sooners have landed a prediction for a pledge from an in-state recruit in the 2028 recruiting class who could be elite
The Oklahoma Sooners have been landing a bunch of predictions lately for their 2028 recruiting class, and now they have one for Gavin Wilson.
The Oklahoma Sooners could be adding another in-state recruit to their 2028 recruiting class. According to Josh McCuistion, the Oklahoma recruiting editor on 3rd Scoop, the Sooners are projected to land 2028 3-star offensive lineman Gavin Wilson out of Bixby.
McCuistion’s prediction carries a 75% confidence rating, and Wilson would become the second commit from Bixby’s program, joining 2027 recruit Kaeden Penny. Wilson is listed at 6-foot-2, 255 pounds, making him a likely interior offensive lineman at the next level. He’s ranked as a top-600 player nationally. His other top schools include Oklahoma State, Missouri, Purdue, and Oregon, but Wilson took two visits to Oklahoma and none to the others. That alone says a lot about where his head is.
Why this matters for Oklahoma’s 2028 class
Right now, Oklahoma only has one player committed in the 2028 class: quarterback Trey Tagliaferri. The Sooners are also projected to land four-star running back Jayshawn Mitchell out of Texas, but no other commitments have materialized yet. Landing Wilson would give the class some early momentum on the offensive line, a position where development under offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh has been well documented.
Wilson still has weight and muscle to add, but that’s expected for a high school offensive lineman with two more years of development ahead of him. Oklahoma’s strength program and Bedenbaugh’s track record make it a strong fit for a player with his frame and upside.
A win over Oklahoma State
This projection would represent a solid in-state win over Oklahoma State. Bixby sits closer to Stillwater than Norman. And, Oklahoma State doesn’t have any commitments in the 2028 class at this point. Wilson would likely have a clearer path to early playing time at Oklahoma State. So the fact that he appears locked in on Oklahoma speaks to how the Sooners’ pitch resonated.
Some fans will look at the three-star rating and shrug, but the rating doesn’t tell the whole story. Oklahoma’s roster is full of former three-star recruits who developed into key contributors. Courtland Guillory, a three-star true freshman last season, started every game and was amazing. Taylor Wein, the best defender on the roster, is a former three-star. Those examples are scattered throughout the roster. And they prove that development matters more than a recruiting ranking two years before a player enrolls.
If McCuistion’s prediction holds, Wilson would be a meaningful early addition to Oklahoma’s 2028 class. He would be another example of the Sooners winning recruiting battles in their own backyard.
