Notre Dame football picked up a somewhat convincing 27-10 victory over Michigan State, and the final score only tells part of the story. The Fighting Irish got breakout performances from several key players at exactly the right time, and those individual steps forward could define how dangerous this team becomes over the rest of the season.

Micah Gilbert’s career night

The third-year wide receiver deserves the spotlight after what was his best game in a Notre Dame uniform by a landslide. Micah Gilbert hauled in eight receptions for 170 yards, averaging 21.3 yards per catch. He opened the game with a 61-yard reception and never slowed down. His releases off the line of scrimmage were fantastic, and he looked explosive working downfield with his big frame.

Gilbert has flashed before, but durability issues held him back during his first two years with the program. He won the boundary receiver job this offseason, a position that offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock loves to use as a difference maker. With Quincy Porter out after transferring in from Ohio State, the question was whether Gilbert could handle that role on his own.

He answered emphatically. This was one of the best wide receiver performances in recent Notre Dame memory, right alongside some of the great individual games from Jeff Samardzija, Michael Floyd, and Chase Claypool.

Notre Dame needs Gilbert to be this player. Jaden Greathouse has been up and down from the slot position. Mylan Graham has shown moments when targeted, but the slot production has been inconsistent on a week-to-week basis.

Jordan Faison had five catches for 38 yards and was a reliable chain mover, but he did not produce many explosive plays. Faison is a dependable volume receiver who can make things happen after the catch, and that role matters. But having Gilbert consistently win one-on-one matchups in the boundary unlocks this Notre Dame passing attack on another level.

Gilbert does not need to replicate eight catches for 170 yards every week. If he can be the guy who wins his boundary reps consistently, this offense takes a massive step.

Armel Mukam’s best game as a Fighting Irish defender

Gilbert was not the only breakout. Defensive tackle Armel Mukam delivered his best game in a Notre Dame uniform against Michigan State. Mukam started the first two games of the season but was quiet in both. He did not even start against the Spartans, with Tionne Gray and Francis Brewu getting the nod instead.

That did not matter.

Mukam came out and made his presence felt with several wins as a pass rusher and a couple of run stops. If Mukam can replicate that kind of production, the defensive tackle room has a chance to be special. Gray continues to have big games. Brewu was a little quiet but still provided quality snaps.

With Jason Onye and Christopher Burgess both out with injuries, the depth at that position needed someone to step up. Mukam was that guy.

Young pass rushers flash their potential

The last breakout group that stood out was the collection of young pass rushers who made their presence felt.

Boubacar Traore had a strong game overall, but the secondary pass rushers were the ones who generated real excitement. Rodney Dunham delivered a flash play late with a quarterback hit. Loghan Thomas got after the quarterback and finished with a sack.

If Notre Dame can get consistent production from those secondary pass rushers alongside Bryce Young, who had a strong start to the season despite being a little quieter in this game, the pass rush has a chance to be a real strength long term. Boubacar Traore will do his job. The defensive tackle room is deep. Adding those complementary edge pieces makes this a unit that could cause serious problems for opposing offenses.

Notre Dame got several breakout performances in this 27-10 win, and those contributions arrived at an ideal moment for a team looking to build momentum through the heart of its schedule.
