Notre Dame vs Stanford Final Score Prediction: CJ Carr and the Fighting Irish look to avoid a trap game against the Cardinal
Notre Dame football hosts Stanford after an uneven win over North Carolina. How will the Fighting Irish respond in their sixth game of 2026?
Notre Dame football and head coach Marcus Freeman welcome the Stanford Cardinal to South Bend for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday. First-year Stanford head coach Tavita Pritchard is hoping for a solid outing after an extremely ugly loss to Florida State last week.
The Fighting Irish had an ugly performance of their own against North Carolina, but they still came away with a 37-26 win. Notre Dame gave up a kickoff return for a touchdown. The elite secondary, led by All-American cornerback Leonard Moore, did not have its best game either. There are clearly some things to clean up, and the Irish are hoping to make those improvements this weekend.
Stanford brings some potential challenges to the table, including former Michigan quarterback Davis Warren. There are also some areas Notre Dame should take advantage of. Here is my final score prediction, along with the key players, matchups, and storylines to watch in game No. 6 for the Irish.
Why Notre Dame should be locked in
It shouldn’t be a surprise, but I am predicting Notre Dame to win this one, and win it decisively.
If the Irish had put together a more dominant performance against North Carolina, I could have seen this being a sloppy contest. That is especially true with a big matchup against BYU on the horizon. However, the up-and-down showing against the Tar Heels and head coach Bill Belichick should have Notre Dame laser-focused this week, especially at home.
Starting fast has been a frequent conversation point under Freeman, and at times it has been a real worry for this team. I do not think it will be a worry against a Stanford defense that is allowing right around 38 points per game.
Key matchups and players to watch
The Notre Dame run game is coming off its best performance of the year in Chapel Hill. That includes the first 100-yard game of true freshman running back Jonaz Walton’s career. I expect the ground attack to pick up right where it left off and establish a rhythm early.
From there, it will be about quarterback CJ Carr creating a couple of explosive plays early in the contest. Wide receivers Jordan Faison and Micah Gilbert are the most likely candidates to make that happen.
On the other side, Warren has mostly had a very good season for the Cardinal. He did show some chinks in the armor last week, though. Even if Moore doesn’t end up playing for Notre Dame, DJ McKinney, Adon Shuler, and Luke Talich still have the talent to make a few eye-popping plays on the back end.
Star EDGE Boubacar Traore is off to a tremendous start, too. I expect him and Bryce Young to wreak some havoc on the Stanford passing attack. Stanford has done some solid things on offense through the first few weeks of its 2026 campaign. Even so, I just don’t see the Cardinal scoring much against this talented Notre Dame defense.
Notre Dame vs. Stanford final score prediction
This is a game that is never in doubt, if you ask me.
There is a lot I like hearing out of the Stanford program, with Pritchard now leading the team and general manager Andrew Luck trying to figure out the best trajectory for the Cardinal. That won’t matter this weekend, though. Notre Dame should dominate this contest from start to finish before turning its full attention to BYU.
Final score prediction: Notre Dame 52, Stanford 9
