Notre Dame football used its 27-10 home victory against the Michigan State Spartans this past weekend to make an impression on a long list of important recruiting targets.

Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish staff put together a strong second half performance, especially on the defensive side of the football, and the timing could not have been better with several key prospects in attendance. Most of the visitors came from the 2028 class, but elite 2029 Nashville (Tenn.) Battleground Academy wide receiver Maddox Porter also made the trip to South Bend.

The 6-foot-2.5, 190-pound pass catcher is currently rated by 247Sports as the No. 4 overall player, the No. 1 wide receiver, and the No. 1 player from the state of Tennessee for the 2029 recruiting class. Getting Porter on campus early was a tremendous opportunity for Freeman, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, and wide receivers coach Mike Brown to impress one of the nation’s top talents.

Porter’s recruitment and production

A long list of impressive programs have already been pushing hard for Porter despite his young age. Some of his top offers so far include Notre Dame, Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Cal, Colorado, Florida State, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Mississippi State, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Washington, and SMU, among several others.

Porter is coming off a tremendous freshman year for Battleground Academy, where he hauled in 78 receptions for 1,547 yards and 27 touchdowns. Through four games into his junior season, Porter has already recorded 19 receptions for 314 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 16.5 yards per reception.

To say it at the most basic level, whether you are looking at his offer list, his recruiting rankings, or his production, Porter is an elite prospect and one of the best overall wide receivers in the country regardless of class.

Micah Gilbert’s historic performance added to the pitch

Notre Dame also did something that many probably did not expect. The Fighting Irish got a historic performance out of starting boundary receiver Micah Gilbert at what feels like the best time possible.

During the contest against Michigan State, Gilbert hauled in eight receptions for 170 yards, the best single-game total from a Notre Dame wide receiver since Chase Claypool in the late 2010s. Heading into the game, Gilbert had recorded just 13 receptions for 171 yards in his entire Notre Dame career.

For the state of the 2026 team, Notre Dame fans are going to hope that this was a precursor of continued ascension for Gilbert as a football player.

For Porter, seeing a player of similar size and stature thriving at the boundary position he would most likely play at Notre Dame was a great sign of the development of the wide receiver room. Even if Gilbert ends up being a solid contributor the rest of the season, that first impression in Notre Dame Stadium against Michigan State will surely remain on the back of the mind for a player of Porter’s status.

Where things stand after the visit

From the sounds of it, things went extremely well with Porter during his time on campus. There is a long time between now and the end of his recruitment, but getting him to South Bend and putting on that type of performance from a wide receiver perspective in front of the nation’s elite cannot go understated. This is a great first step for Notre Dame, and we will see where things continue to move as the Fighting Irish battle the nation’s top programs for Porter’s services.
