LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin didn’t hold back this week while discussing a potential SEC rule change.

According to On3, the SEC is considering putting the SEC intraconference transfer rule back into place. The rule would require SEC players to sit out a year if transferring to another SEC program.

Kiffin said during his radio show this week that restoring the transfer rule would be “terrible.”

“I do have opinions,” said Kiffin. “That would be terrible. I mean, I can’t imagine a worse decision. It’s discussed that you could not take SEC transfers (unless they sit out a year), and so when a kid goes to transfer from the SEC, he can’t [stay] in the SEC. Well, he’s going to go to other conferences.

“So we would just be handing away a lot of players every year and limiting them in that they can’t go to the other 15 SEC schools that they’ve grown up fans of, or maybe in the same area where they’re from. They’d be forced to go to other conferences and play against us and play for other conferences. I joked today, I said the other conferences would celebrate that rule.”

Kiffin added that this rule would be like the NFL saying that free agents in the AFC can’t sign with other AFC teams and could only sign with NFC teams.

Kiffin is spot on. I know everyone has strong feelings about the yearly transfer cycle, but this rule would cause a lot of talent to exit the SEC.
