There is no doubt in my mind that Saturday’s game between LSU and Ole Miss will be one of the most hostile environments that we have ever seen in college football. I know that Pete Golding urged the Ole Miss faithful to represent the university appropriately, but by the time that game rolls around, the vitriol for Lane Kiffin and LSU is going to be unlike anything we have seen. So the question becomes, can LSU focus and overcome the environment?

My answer is yes. I know Sam Leavitt had a rocky week 2 against Louisiana Tech after a dominant showing against Clemson. But I still believe in those pass catchers, the offensive line, and ultimately the head coach-quarterback combo that LSU employs. The key for the Tigers will be slowing down the backfield duo of Kewan Lacy and Trinidad Chambliss. If players like Whit Weeks and Ty Benefield come to play, I think the Tigers can do enough to pull this one out.

We have what might be the most dramatic game of the season when it comes to storylines playing out on Saturday. Lane Kiffin returns to Ole Miss after how he left them last season makes for an intriguing matchup. LSU and Ole Miss have two very good college quarterbacks with dual threat ability, and this game has the chance to see plenty of points put up on the board.

I have no doubt Ole Miss is going to be up for this game, and they’ll have extra motivation to get one against Kiffin. However, you can say the same about Kiffin facing a team that he knows doesn’t have much admiration for him. LSU’s roster is just better overall, and I think the Tigers will play a more physical game over four quarters that Ole Miss won’t be able to outlast. Give me the Tigers in a close one.

This game falling so early on the calendar is fascinating, especially since both The Tigers and Rebels are operating at a high level, including big wins over Power Four opponents. It’s hard to doubt Lane Kiffin, who won his first game at Neyland Stadium when he returned as the Ole Miss head coach, but this is going to be a little different. The Rebels have the better quarterback in Trinidad Chambliss, who has the X-factor that you want the leader of an offense to have. This team is going to be more motivated than Tennessee team of a few years ago, mainly because multiple members of his current Ole Miss squad were negatively impacted.

This game has plenty of storylines with Kiffin returning to Oxford, just one offseason removed from nothing but drama and some bad feelings on both sides. Golding wants to show that the Ole Miss program is in a great spot, while Kiffin navigates some early season expectations for LSU.

The difference in this game will come at quarterback between Chambliss and Sam Leavitt for Ole Miss and LSU, respectively. Whichever quarterback makes the biggest play at the most opportune moment comes out the victor in my eyes. As of today, I have a lot more confidence in Chambliss making that big play in the most important moments. Add in the fact that Ole Miss has the home-field advantage, and give me the Rebels to win this one in a really close outcome.

The staff is split right down the middle — two picks favor LSU pulling it out in hostile territory, two picks lean toward the Rebels riding Chambliss’s playmaking ability on home turf.
