Ohio State football has a pair of key weapons unexpectedly up in the air to miss Week 6 game vs. Maryland
Ohio State’s latest availability report has a couple of key offensive weapons questionable to play against Maryland.
The Ohio State Buckeyes return home in Week 6 of the college football season to host the Maryland Terrapins, and there’s a chance Ohio State could be without multiple starters.
It’s a key game for the Buckeyes before they take on Indiana in Week 7, and Ohio State has three starters listed as questionable to play against Maryland.
In the Wednesday night availability report, Ohio State listed wide receiver Brandon Inniss, wide receiver Devin McCuin, and offensive tackle Philip Daniels as questionable. Additionally, defensive end Khary Wilder was listed as questionable, and the Buckeyes ruled out safety Leroy Roker.
Ohio State has 2 starting wide receivers banged up after the Iowa win
Ohio State should be able to beat Maryland even without these players. Still, it’s notable that two starting wide receivers are questionable coming out of the win over Iowa and could miss the Week 6 game.
Inniss is a two-time team captain and wears the Block O for Ohio State. He has 10 catches for 147 yards and one touchdown this fall. McCuin arrived as a transfer addition from UTSA, and he’s Ohio State’s second-leading receiver behind Jeremiah Smith with 17 catches for 245 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Losing both players for a game would take two offensive options away from the Buckeyes’ passing attack for quarterback Julian Sayin. Smith is going to be the focal point regardless, but the receivers around him are key to keeping defenses from rolling complete coverage his way.
Freshman wideouts could see more snaps for the Buckeyes
If Inniss and McCuin can’t suit up against Maryland, expect to see more of freshman wide receivers Chris Henry Jr. and Brock Boyd for the Buckeyes. The young duo would get a chance to show what they can do with extended snaps in a home game before Ohio State’s showdown with Indiana.
Don’t sleep on what a game like this could mean for the freshmen. More playing time now could pay off later in the season when Ohio State needs depth at the position again.
Philip Daniels’ absence would keep the offensive line shuffled
Daniels has not played since Week 2 against Texas, when he suffered an injury. If he misses another game against Maryland, Gabe VanSickle will be at right guard and Austin Siereveld will slide over to right tackle once again.
That arrangement isn’t new for the Buckeyes, since Daniels has been out for several weeks. Still, getting their starting right tackle back would give Ohio State’s offensive line more stability heading into the back half of the season.
It’s only Wednesday, and these players are just questionable to play. The availability report can change before Saturday’s game, and it likely will. Even so, it’s big news that two wide receivers are banged up coming out of the Iowa game and might not be able to go against Maryland.
