Many were caught off guard when the Philadelphia Eagles traded safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans for guard Kenyon Green and a package of draft picks, including Gardner-Johnson himself, who at first thought the whole thing was an April Fool’s joke.
At the time, CJGJ brushed it off as “just business,” but now that he’s had time to think about it, Gardner-Johnson is opening up about how he really feels about the trade and what transpired behind that scenes.
Gardner-Johnson posted on a since-expired Instagram story that the Eagles' decision to trade him was more than just a salary cap move.
“I was a test dummy for them,” Gardner-Johnson wrote his Instagram story. “So now they can be like my ‘scheme’ work, or did my skill set make it work.
“I had 0 issues. [People] had issues with me. So yeah let the salary cap be the ‘excuse.'”
Though parting ways with Philadelphia may have left a bitter taste, Gardner-Johnson is far from done making noise in the NFL. As he enters his seventh season, the veteran safety remains one of the league’s most disruptive playmakers in the secondary. In 2024, he led the Eagles with six interceptions, continuing to show off his ball-hawking instincts and versatility that have defined his career.
Across six seasons, Gardner-Johnson has compiled an impressive resume with 18 interceptions, 51 pass breakups, and 304 total tackles. Whether it’s locking down receivers in coverage, flying downhill to make a stop, or flipping momentum with a timely pick, CJGJ continues to prove that he’s not just productive, he’s a difference-maker.
And in Houston, the hope is that both his playmaking ability and signature trash talk will be much more appreciated.
