When the Jacksonville Jaguars selected first overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, they made a surprise selection in Georgia edge rusher Travon Walker. He flew up draft boards quickly after the NFL Scouting Combine, where he tested like a freak athlete. It was a controversial pick due to his lack of production.
That pick has worked out for the Jaguars, as they have picked up his fifth-year option going into the 2025 NFL Draft.
Jacksonville Jaguars pick up fifth-year option on Travon Walker
The one player that people expect to go first overall was Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who the Detroit Lions selected at second overall. He was lauded across the board as the better prospect because of his elite three-cone and plus production profile.
His first season wasn't exactly as good as you would have liked. He gathered 49 tackles with 3.5 sacks and there were a lot of questions about if they made the right selection. Luckily, Walker took things to the next level quickly.
In 2023, Walker had 10.0 sacks and 10.0 tackles for loss with 10.5 sacks and 13.0 tackles for loss in 2024. He's emerged as a great pass rusher over the course of the last two seasons and those numbers don't emphasize how good he is as a run defender.
He's excellent across from Josh Allen in all phases of the game, which is going to be huge with the Jaguars coming in and trying to elevate the roster to a perennial playoff contender.
Was Walker the right pick over Hutchinson? It's a good question but I do believe Hutchinson gets overhyped in Detroit because they have become the darlings of the NFL. Walker has been just as good, if not better over the course of the season.
