New Orleans preparing for life after Derek Carr

Taking a quarterback in the second round is not a subtle selection. That is early day two capital when it is 40th overall. Kellen Moore clearly believes that Shough can step right in to potentially play a role as a rookie.

There's clear dissension with Derek Carr at the moment, and neither side seems to be budging.

Tyler Shough, QB, Louisville Cardinals Scouting Report

Age: 25 (9/29/1999)

A to Z Sports Draft Projection: Round 3

Scouting Report: Despite being the oldest player expected to be drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft class, Tyler Shough only has one season with more than seven starts in it. Injuries and uneven play throughout his career even when he did manage to stay on the field led him to bounce around from Oregon to Texas Tech to Louisville. He played his best under center with the Cardinals this past season putting up around 3200 passing yards and 23 touchdowns in 12 games. The former four star prospect has good enough athleticism and a strong arm to help him overcome other red flags (age and health) if an NFL team gives him a shot.  — Ian Valentino, A to Z Sports

Career Projection:
Average Backup or Rotational Player

Shough will compete to start in year one

As an older QB prospect, there is little time to really sit Shough and have him learn from a veteran. A veteran option may not even truly be in the room for the Saints, either.

We don't know how the Derek Carr situation will work out. Outside of him, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener are the other notable options at QB for New Orleans next season as of now.

I would expect Shough to have a chance to start immediately for New Orleans, given he is the final addition to the QB room this offseason.
