Right now, the quarterback room is second-year J.J. McCarthy who was selected at 10th overall and Brett Rypien, an undrafted free agent who has bounced around the league over the past few years.
Not having a backup quarterback is arguably the biggest opening on the Vikings roster right now.
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah comments on the backup quarterback situation
Trying to identify what the Vikings will do for the backup quarterback spot has been a popular topic, with one of the main rationales provided being maximizing the compensatory formula. Adofo-Mensah was asked specifically about that and gave a thoughtful answer.
"You know, it hasn't only been about the comp pick situation, but we are on the lookout for that. The comp pick thing is always a thing where last year, we brought in Greenard, forfeited a comp pick. It's an opportunity cost of signing somebody. It's not the end-all be-all. When you find a 27-year-old pass rusher who fits your team and skill sets, should you want you go do it? Because you ask yourself, what would I rather have? And the answer sometimes is, I would rather have that really good player. Other times, the answer is something different. But quarterback-wise, we're going to focus on just as my staff always does best opportunities there. So we're not going to rush it either way, but we're always mindful of it."
With Adofo-Mensah, you have to read between the lines, as he doesn't tell you dirctly what he's thinking. Basically, the Vikings don't seem to have found the right guy at backup quarterback to make them give up one of those compensatory picks.
Now, it could also mean that the future backup quarterback is still on the roster of another team, like Sam Howell on the Seattle Seahawks. We shall see how things progress, but the Vikings certainly have the position on their radar.
