A quarterback with some brief College Football Playoff experience entered the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday, and the Tennessee Vols are expected to "evaluate" him.
According to On3's Pete Nakos, Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Steve Angeli is entering the NCAA transfer portal after spending the last three seasons in South Bend.
Angeli, 6-foot-2/205 lbs, is a former three-star recruit from New Jersey who signed with Notre Dame during the 2022 recruiting cycle.
"Sources told On3 that the Volunteers will evaluate Angeli, but Tennessee continues to wait to see how the quarterback market develops," wrote Nakos.
It's worth noting that Tennessee offensive lineman Sam Pendleton, who transferred to UT from Notre Dame earlier this offseason, was teammates with Angeli for two seasons in South Bend.
Angeli was part of a three-man quarterback competition at Notre Dame this spring. Irish head coach Marcus Freeman hasn't named a starter yet, but he indicated last weekend that he was planning to narrow the competition down to just two quarterbacks.
“You would like to be able to kind of go in the fall with a two-quarterback battle," said Freeman. "It’s really hard with truly having a three-quarterback battle. But we’ve got to sit down and have conversations about what’s best for our program, what’s best for our quarterbacks, and we’ll make those decisions in the future.”
Angeli's entry into the portal could be an indication that he was told he would be the No. 3 quarterback at Notre Dame this fall.
The New Jersey native was pressed into action for Notre Dame in a College Football Playoff game against Penn State last season when Riley Leonard was briefly forced out of action. Angeli led a two-minute field goal drive to end the first half in the Irish's win against the Nittany Lions.
It doesn't sound like anything is imminent between Tennessee and Angeli beyond the Vols simply doing their due diligence as they look to add a quarterback to the roster in the wake of Nico Iamaleava's recent departure from Rocky Top.
