The Buffalo Bills are heading into the NFL Draft without having many dire needs, but one they did have was securing depth at cornerback. They did so in droves on Thursday by executing a reuinion.
The Bills have signed 2017 first-round pick TreDavious White to a one-year contract worth up to $6.8 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Buffalo Bills sign CB TreDavious White
It's a really interesting move for the Bills to bring back White. They chose to move on from him after the 2023 season due to multiple seasons that were ended by injury, including a torn Achilles tendon, one that often robs players of explosiveness, something that is very important when it comes to cornerback.
Last year, the Bills had issues at cornerback during the playoffs. Christian Benford suffered a concussion in back-to-back games with the second being against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. Taron Johnson also hurt his shoulder in the playoffs, leaving the Bills in a tough spot.
The key to this contract is going to be the "up to" verbiage used by Schefter. That is usually agent speak for "this contract isn't that good, but it's got good incentives." It's lilkely a deal close to the minimum with incentives based on playing time and both team and individual success.
It's a smart wager for the Bills to make. They bring back a former first-round pick who was an All-Pro at one point at an inexpensive cost. If he plays anywhere close to his peak, it's going to be well worth it. If he doesn't, he's a solid depth guy who right now projects to be CB4. Either way, it's a risk worth taking.
