The New Orleans Saints are amidst a quarterback competition on the gridiron. Meanwhile on the court. the New Orleans Pelicans just put together their rookie class from the 2025 NBA Draft.

Pelicans draft guard Jeremiah Fears

With the seventh overall selection, the Pelicans selected Oklahoma Sooners guard Jeremiah Fears. Fears was an impressive ball handler and scorer in the SEC a season ago, and there are plenty of fans excited for his arrival in The Big Easy.

New Orleans was a laughable 21-61 this past season.

It was a disappointing campaign after a 49-33 record in 2023-2024. The Pels looked like they may have a nice, young core prior to this past season, but now, their roster looks rather inexperienced and thin.

Both New Orleans franchises dealing with rebuild?

Possibly similarly to the Saints, the Pelicans are entering a potential rebuild phase. Neither team has high expectations from national media or sports books for next season. Both squads have young draft picks that may play pivotal roles in quarterback Tyler Shough and Fears.

I wrote when he was drafted that it was unfortunate for him to be drafted by New Orleans. They are a "cursed" organization, at least that's what former players say. They are consistently a bad team, and they always have injuries. But now that I think about it, Fears will be okay. — Justin Churchill

The Saints have had their fair share of struggles in recent seasons and earlier in their franchise's lifetime. Nobody understands that better than their fandom.

New Orleans is currently the team with the worst odds (+1100) to win the NFC South in 2025-2026, via FanDuel. For their fans, some of them hope or believe that Shough can be a long-term answer at the most importantly position in professional sports.

Meanwhile for the Pelicans, picking Fears in the top ten was a clear signal that they believe in his potential to help them get on the right track going forward. Only time will tell if either draft night decision works out for the clubs in New Orleans.
