The Los Angeles Chargers have not made many splashes in free agency quite yet. Particularly on offense, they've been quieter than many people expected them to be. That being said, they made a late-night addition on Friday to bolster their offensive line.
Chargers sign Mekhi Becton
According to the organization, the Chargers have signed OL Mekhi Becton to a two-year deal. He's a former first-round pick.
Becton played guard for Philadelphia a season ago, and that seems to be his projection for the Chargers as well. He could lock down a starting role ahead of the season, and considering his price, that seems likely for Jim Harbaugh's team.
Justin Herbert was under pressure, particularly from the interior, far too often in 2024. This move is a step in the right direction when it comes to improving that. Not to mention, Becton was a great run blocker with the Eagles.
For Herbert and LA's offense to find their ceiling, it starts on the ground. They recently signed veteran running back Najee Harris, too.
The 6-7, 363-pound lineman helped pave the way for running back Saquon Barkley to rush for over 2,000 yards and 13 touchdowns en route to being named the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year by The Associated Press. Becton also protected Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts to have the most efficient season of his career, registering a 103.7 passer rating and totaling 32 touchdowns (18 passing, 14 rushing) to just five interceptions. Originally the No. 11 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, Becton has started 49-of-50 career games, including the postseason, for the Jets and Eagles. — Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles is building a beastly unit in the trenches for their offense. They've embraced the Jim Harbaugh way when it comes to the size of their linemen, and Becton is another perfect example of that stature preference.
Becton is an important pickup for the Chargers, and that decision opens up their options in the first two days of the 2025 NFL Draft as well.
