Ravens sign backup quarterback
The Baltimore Ravens have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with former Dallas Cowboys QB Cooper Rush. The deal is worth $12.2 million, according to Adam Schefter.
Rush is 31 years old. He’s appeared in 38 games – with 14 starts. The Cowboys went 4-1 with Rush at quarterback in 2022, after he replaced an injured Dak Prescott.
The veteran backup is quite honestly the definition of a solid backup option. There are games where Rush looks like he has starter upside when he's come in for a team's starter. Other times, he's proven why no one has seen him as a long-term quarterback option
This past season, he led them to a 4-4 record in place of an injured Prescott, finishing his time in Dallas with a mark of 9-5. Rush was the quintessential game-manager, completing 60.7 percent of his attempts for 3,463 yards with 20 touchdowns and 10 picks. — Sports Illustrated
Jackson has stayed rather healthy over the past couple of seasons for the Ravens. He's started sixteen and seventeen games, respectively.
Breaking a QB trend
That being said, a mobile QB always presents a bit of injury risk, as opposed to someone who takes less hits at the position. Jackson's elusiveness and smarts along the sideline has helped him avoid taking major hits, though.
Rush is not a mobile option, making him a bit more intriguing for a team who has usually held a backup with that sort of ability in the past under HC John Harbaugh.
Recent backups or depth QB options for Baltimore include players like Tyler Huntley, Trace McSorley, Josh Johnson, and Anthony Brown. Rush does not fit that mold, so they may be shifting their overall plan for Jackson's backup.
