The wide receiver position may not be the Kansas City Chiefs' top need as it was last offseason, but they could still use another quality player there.

News broke out of Seattle on Wednesday that Seahawks star WR DK Metcalf has requested to be traded after the two sides were unable to come to an agreement regarding a contract extension. Earlier this week, Seahawks reporter Corbin Smith reported that the Chiefs are monitoring the situation between Seattle and Metcalf.

It is important to remember that monitoring and being active are two different actions. It's unknown how aggressively, if at all, the Chiefs will pursue Metcalf. However, the fact that they are keeping an eye on what's happening with him means that there is interest there.

It also signals that Kansas City would like to add a veteran WR during free agency, whether it's Metcalf of someone else. Whoever acquires Metcalf will have to not only surrender some draft capital, but give the contract extension he's looking for. He has one year left on his current deal in which he is due $18 million.

That could be difficult for the Chiefs as they don't have a ton of money or draft picks to work with. They could certainly make it happen if they really want to, but it would likely be their only significant move of the offseason. The idea of pairing Metcalf with fellow K.C. WRs Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice is quite fascinating, though.

Metcalf has been one of the better WRs in the NFL since he was drafted by Seattle in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He has been named to the Pro Bowl twice, and was Second-Team All-Pro in 2020. In 97 career games with the Seahawks, Metcalf has recorded 438 receptions, 6,324 yards, and 48 touchdowns.
