The Los Angeles Chargers are releasing star pass rusher Joey Bosa, per Fox Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
The move will save the Chargers a whopping $25 million in salary cap space. They were already in good shape with their cap at roughly $70 million under, but now they can really go on a spending spree if they want to.
It will be a surreal feeling for Chargers fans to see Bosa in another uniform next year. The former 2016 third overall pick has been named to the Pro Bowl five times, including this past season. In 107 games with Los Angeles, Bosa recorded 343 total tackles, 72 sacks, 199 quarterback pressures, 17 forced fumbles, and three passes defensed.
The knock on Bosa has been his inability to consistently remain healthy, playing full seasons in just three of his nine years in the NFL. With linebacker Khalil Mack set to hit free agency, the Chargers are in big need of quality pass rushers. LB Tuli Tuipulotu recorded 8.5 sacks for L.A. last season.
Moving on from Bosa (and potentially Mack) not only saves them money, but provides the opportunity for the Chargers to get younger within their front seven. As for Bosa, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that he could join his younger brother Nick in San Francisco with the 49ers.
A pair of pass rushing brothers starting on the same team would be really unique. Still just 29-years-old, Bosa should have plenty of quality years left if he can stay healthy. He remains explosive off the line of scrimmage and plays with incredible technique and power. Wherever he ends up, he'll provide experience and veteran leadership to his new team, as well as elite play on the field.
