The Pittsburgh Steelers broke all tendencies when they shocked the NFL world and traded for star WR DK Metcalf.
Finally acquiring a second option on Pittsburgh's perimeter, Metcalf should be a staple on the Steelers' offense for years to come.
But if not for Cam Heyward, he would be on the roster of an AFC foe…
Cam Heyward gave Metcalf last-minute recruiting pitch
“I was in California at the time, and I heard DK was in town, and then someone was like, ‘Oh he’s going to the Chargers and so I hit up one of my friends, Tracy Perlman and she was like, ‘Yeah, I hear he might be going.’ I’m like, ‘Text DK. Tell him to come with us.’ And then like in the next week, he was already with us. I don’t know how that happened, but DK was all about it," said Heyward on his Not Just Football podcast.
The power of connections is often underestimated in the NFL. Add on the lore of the Steelers (though that is under construction right now), and yes, even trades of this magnitude can swing in a minute.
The fact that Heyward facilitated the whole thing is fairly amazing. I'm sure the Steelers brass was in on DK. In fact, Mike Tomlin went in hard on acquiring him. But it seems like Heyward's pitch swung the tide.
We know his words carry weight, as he recently sent a clear message to the Steelers' front office regarding the need to win and win now. That aligns with recruiting Metcalf, as Heyward knows the team's window is closing.
“I think we’re in a state of urgency," Heyward told the Rich Eisen Show. "We have a lot of guys, like myself, that are in the latter stages of their career and we all want to win. It’s not just enough to win a playoff game, which we haven’t won in a couple of years, and there’s a bad taste in our mouth because of that.”
As for the Los Angeles Chargers, they and the Steelers have a similar taste in talent, as L.A. signed three Steelers starters from 2024 in free agency and were seemingly close to poaching Pittsburgh's prize acquisition.
But not everyone has a Cam Heyward to close a deal, and that worked in the Steelers' favor.
