It looks like the Tennessee Vols may be the team to beat for one of the most coveted guards in the NCAA transfer portal.
CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported that Maryland transfer guard Ja'Kobi Gillespie, who is from Greeneville, TN, has an in-person visit set up with Tennessee on Tuesday.
Gillespie, 6-foot-1/186 lbs, averaged 14.7 points per game for Maryland last season while connecting on 41 percent of his three-point attempts.
According to On3's Pete Nakos, the Vols have "all the momentum" in the battle for Gillespie, which also includes Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, and Villanova.
"Tennessee has all the momentum to land Maryland transfer Ja’Kobi Gillespie, sources tell On3," wrote Nakos on Tuesday.
It looks like the Vols are trying to land Gillespie, who started his college career at Belmont, before the dead period begins on Thursday (which runs through April 10). We'll see if Tennessee can close the deal before the dead period starts. But even if they don't, it sounds like the Vols are still in a good spot to land the talented guard.
