NFL Network's Tom Pelissero first reported that the Chiefs are set to bring back veteran S Mike Edwards on a one-year deal. A former third-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of the University of Kentucky in 2019, Edwards only spent one season in Kansas City in 2023
He appeared in 17 regular-season games and started five after Bryan Cook was injured. He recorded 51 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, and two fumble recoveries, including one returned 101 yards for a touchdown, marking one of the most productive seasons of his career.
Edwards also started all four games for Kansas City during the 2023-2024 postseason, recording 12 total tackles, an interception, and two passes defended. Edwards is a two-time Super Bowl champion, winning with the Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV (against K.C.) and the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII (against S.F.).
After leaving Kansas City as a free agent in 2024, Edwards split his time between the Buffalo Bills before he was eventually released and allowed to reunite with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the remainder of the season. He appeared in just eight games with two starts, recording 12 total tackles and one pass defended.
Why does Mike Edwards' reunion with the Chiefs make sense for 2025?
After losing Justin Reid to the New Orleans Saints in free agency, the Chiefs were certainly missing a veteran element in their defensive back room.
With Bryan Cook, Jaden Hicks, and Chamarri Conner in line for snaps, Edwards raises the ceiling for a group that lacks significant depth beyond those three players. Deon Bush has played sparingly, mostly on the scout team, during his tenure in Kansas City. The team also has S Jason Taylor II, a reserve/future signing, on the 90-man roster.
K.C. knows that Edwards can start in a pinch and provide reliable depth, if not compete for a starting job. This move likely solidifies the safety group and makes the position an unlikely choice for the Chiefs in the 2025 NFL draft.
