Among the several undrafted free agents that the Los Angeles Chargers have signed is South Carolina Gamecocks running back Raheim "Rocket" Sanders.
The Chargers will have a new-look RB room following the free agent signing of Najee Harris and the selection of first-round pick Omarion Hampton in the 2025 NFL Draft. They may also retain J.K. Dobbins, who Los Angeles placed an unrestricted free agent tender on.
As for Sanders, he will have a legitimate shot at making the 53-man roster come September. Originally beginning his collegiate career with the Arkansas Razorbacks, Sanders transferred to South Carolina for the 2024 season. He made an instant impact for Arkansas in 2021 as a freshman, rushing for 578 yards and five touchdowns.
Sanders then broke out in a big way in 2022, recording 1,443 rushing yards and 10 TDs, also tacking on 28 receptions for 271 yards. Unfortunately in 2023, Sanders' season was derailed by multiple injuries. He was nagged by injuries again in 2024, but was still able to rack up 881 rushing yards and 316 receiving yards in 12 games.
If not for injuries, Sanders could have been one of the top rated RBs in the entire draft. He has a nice blend of power and 4.46 40-yard dash speed, as well as solid receiving skills. When healthy, Sanders can be a three-down workhorse back. His physical running style and well-rounded game is exactly what coach Jim Harbaugh loves in a RB.
If Sanders is going to push for a roster spot, he'll have to really impress during offseason OTAs and training camp. Harris and Hampton will dominate the touches, but Sanders could slide into the RB3 role if he makes the most of his opportunities. Becoming a contributor on special teams would also go a long way in helping his chances. With Harris signed to just a one-year contract, Sanders could work his way up to No. 2 on the depth chart behind Hampton in 2026.
