The first couple games of Wild Card Weekend featured two of the three games from the AFC side of this year's NFL playoffs bracket. In the early game, the Houston Texans buried the Los Angeles Chargers, and in the night game, Derrick Henry, Lamar Jackson, and the Ravens dominated the Pittsburgh Steelers from start to finish.
With those two outcomes, we now know exactly what lies ahead for the Buffalo Bills if they're able to beat the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
"Rematch road" is now in full effect. If the Bills beat the Broncos, Buffalo will host the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round, with the Texans going to Kansas City. A win by the Bills and the Chiefs in the divisional rounds would, once again, pit the two teams against each other in the AFC Championship in Arrowhead Stadium.
Baltimore looked dominant. Their ground attack with Jackson and Henry is nearly impossible to defend, especially when they put Jackson in option schemes. The defense has to either respect Jackson's speed around the edge, or over-commit to stopping the Derrick Henry freight train up the middle. It's a brutal matchup, and one that the Bills did not successfully handle earlier this season. In their prior meeting, Henry rumbled for 199 rushing yards and a touchdown in a 35-10 beat down of the Bills.
It's not going to be an easy road ahead for Buffalo, but it never is in the AFC. The conference is loaded with superstar quarterbacks and impressive rosters. Getting out of the conference is a major accomplishment, but it all starts with the need to beat the Broncos at Highmark Stadium. One game at a time.
