The Kansas City Chiefs have added a trio of new players to the practice squad over the past several weeks, addressing numerous needs and depth issues on the team for now and in the future.
Each of those players has since been assigned jersey numbers. Keep in mind that practice squad player jersey number assignments aren't as set in stone as those worn by players on the 53-man roster. In fact, if the Chiefs were to sign a new player to the 53-man roster, they'd have the option to snag any of these jersey numbers for themselves, so long as their position group can wear the said jersey number.
With all of that in mind, here's a look at the latest jersey number assignments:
DT Siaki Ika, TE Robert Tonyan, and LB Blake Lynch were all assigned jersey numbers
Ahead of the Week 15 matchup against the Cleveland Browns, the Chiefs signed former Browns draft pick Siaki Ika to the practice squad. Catching up on his signing, he's been wearing jersey No. 99 during practice, which was most recently worn by DE Cameron Thomas. It's historically been a good interior defensive line number under Andy Reid, with Jerrell Powe, Vance Walker, Rakeem Nunez-Roches, and Khalen Saunders all having worn that number in Kansas City since 2013. Ika previously wore jersey No. 62 with the Browns, the same number he also wore with the Baylor Bears and LSU Tigers.
Ahead of the team's Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17, the team brought in veteran TE Robert Tonyan to the practice squad. Tonyan has been assigned jersey No. 49, which was most recently worn by K Matthew Wright. Matt Araiza wore the number in training camp before switching to No. 14. The most notable Andy Reid-era Chief to wear the jersey number is none other than Daniel "Dirty Dan" Sorensen. Tonyan previously wore No. 18 with the Chicago Bears and No. 85 with the Green Bay Packers.
Finally, the Chiefs recently signed LB Blake Lynch to the practice squad. Lynch will wear jersey No. 59, which was previously assigned to LS Randen Plattner when LS James Winchester was hurt. The number has been worn by some notable linebackers in Kansas City during the last decade, including Darius Harris, Justin March, and Reggie Ragland. The most notable Chiefs to have worn the number include Donnie Edwards and Gary Spani. Lynch has worn several jersey numbers in his NFL career, including No. 53 with the Los Angeles Chargers and No. 48 with the Minnesota Vikings.
Andy Reid’s looming playoff decision is the Chiefs’ most important since Marty Schottenheimer’s Elvis Grbac vs. Rich Gannon
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid has a major decision to make at the left tackle position for the playoffs.
