Regardless of what happens with his contract extension, Brock Purdy will be under significant pressure in 2025 as the San Francisco 49ers aim to bounce back from a severely underwhelming 2024.
But he has already received a boost to his hopes of recapturing his 2023 best with a surprising decision from one of his most important coaches.
Purdy has previously spoken very highly of the work done by 49ers quarterbacks coach Brian Griese, who is credited with having a significant influence on the 49ers' decision to select Purdy with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft since that point.
It was reported last week that the New York Jets had submitted a request to interview Griese for their head coach position.
But Purdy and the 49ers do not need to worry about losing Griese this offseason.
Per Brian Costello of The New York Post, Griese declined the Jets' request for an interview.
The Jets are conducting an exhaustive search for the replacement for Robert Saleh, who could end up back on the 49ers' staff for a second spell as defensive coordinator. New York has interviewed a wide range of candidates, meaning the chances of Griese getting the job anyway were probably likely to be slim.
Still, it will likely be very reassuring to Purdy that there is seemingly no chance of Griese leaving this offseason. There has already been great change to the 49er coaching staff but, with his decision to turn down a head coaching interview, Griese is ensuring a key bit of continuity.
Kyle Shanahan’s college connections could see the 49ers land high-profile backup for Brock Purdy in NFL Draft
It would be an ideal spot for him.
