While John Lynch confirmed one veteran will be allowed to hit the open market this offseason with Javon Hargrave set to be released, the San Francisco 49ers general manager has no such plans to facilitate an exit for Deebo Samuel.
The wide receiver's future with the team has seemed murky since his name came up in trade talks during the 2024 NFL Draft.
A down year for Samuel in which his touchdown tally dropped from 12 to 4 and he posted his lowest number of yards from scrimmage (806) since 2020 (417 in just seven games) only served to give credence to the notion that one of the league's most diverse playmakers could be headed for pastures new.
But Lynch put that idea to bed in the 49ers' season-ending press conference on Wednesday.
"Deebo's under contract," said Lynch. "He's a good player and has done a ton for this organization and we're not in the business of letting good players out of here."
Samuel is entering the final year of the contract he signed after his first-team All-Pro season in 2021. He carries a cap hit of $15.95 million in 2025, though the majority of that is tied up in prorated signing and option bonuses that have already been paid.
With Jauan Jennings enjoying a breakout 2024 and first-round pick Ricky Pearsall flashing significant promise down the stretch, there could be an argument for exploring moving on from Samuel after a disappointing campaign.
But with Brandon Aiyuk's return date from knee surgery unknown and the 49ers having other priorities that will likely prohibit them from spending another high pick on a receiver in the 2025 draft, keeping around a versatile weapon in whom quarterback Brock Purdy has tremendous trust is the sensible course of action.
Brock Purdy will soon be receiving a raise regardless of whether he gets his wish over 49ers contract talks
A bump in salary is already secured.
