Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for December/January.

This was a no-brainer decision from the NFL. James was absolutely dominant in December/January, recording 28 tackles (seven for loss), three sacks, two passes defensed, one interception. and one fumble recovery in six games.

This is James’ second-career Player of the Month award, also earning the honor in November of 2022. He is the only Chargers player in team history to win multiple Defensive Player of the Month awards. He was also selected to the 2025 Pro Bowl roster for the fourth time in his career.

As a whole during the 2024 season James recorded 93 total tackles (10 for loss), one interception, seven passes defensed, 5.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery in 16 games played. Those numbers could put him in play to earn his fourth career All-Pro selection.

James is building quite the resume for himself. The only thing really missing is postseason success, which he'll hope to achieve beginning this weekend when the Chargers travel to Houston to take on the Texans in the Wild Card round. James hasn't won a playoff game since his rookie year back in 2018.

If James can stay healthy he will very likely continue to pile up the accolades. That means in a few years we can start talking about him as a potential future Hall of Famer, especially if Los Angeles can sustain consistent postseason success. The Chargers will be leaning on James on Saturday as they face a talented Texans' passing attack.
