Panic spread throughout the Tennessee Vols fan base on Saturday night when news broke that true freshman wide receiver Mike Matthews is flirting with the idea of entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Matthews is a former five-star recruit who saw limited playing time in 2024, finishing the season with seven receptions for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

The Vols are a bit thin at wide receiver right now and Matthews, if he stick around in Knoxville, will likely be the most talented receiver on Tennessee's roster next fall.

On3's Pete Nakos updated the Matthews saga on Monday morning and he noted that the talented wide receiver hasn't officially entered the portal yet.

Nakos also reported that there's some confidence that Matthews will return to Tennessee.

"Speaking to a source again, there remains some confidence of a return but nothing has been finalized," wrote Nakos

Things can change quickly when it comes to the transfer portal, so all options are still on the table for Matthews.

In addition to trying to keep Matthews on Rocky Top, the Vols are also reportedly pursuing USC transfer wide receiver Zachariah Branch (who is also a former five-star recruit).

If Tennessee can retain Matthews and land Branch, the Vols' wide receiver room could go from a perceived weakness to one of the team's biggest strengths.
