The Kansas City Chiefs are getting into the holiday spirit with the perfect uniform color combination for their Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17.
The team is making sure that fans get a white Christmas with its white-on-white alternate uniform combination. This is the second time Kansas City has worn the color combination this season. They wore it in the Week 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons on "Sunday Night Football." The Chiefs also wore white-on-white uniforms twice in 2023: in Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings and Week 13 against the Green Bay Packers.
This will mark the eighth time they've worn this alternate uniform combination during the Patrick Mahomes era (Rams 2018, Raiders 2021, Chargers 2021, Chargers 2022, Vikings 2023, Packers 2023, and Falcons 2024). During the previous seven-game stretch, they only once scored fewer than 22 points while wearing this alternate uniform combination.
Chiefs' mixed history with white-on-white alternates
The team has a bit of a mixed history with these uniforms. Their recent success is notable, but this was the combination that the team infamously wore during their Super Bowl I matchup with the Packers. Former Chiefs HC Hank Stram was said to have been a bit superstitious as it relates to uniform combinations. After their loss to Green Bay in Super Bowl I, Stram banned the white-on-white look from there on out. Kansas City shelved the uniform color combination for practically 20 years before Marty Schottenheimer brought back the look in 1989. Since 2018, the Chiefs have had a 5-2 record while wearing this color combination.
What are the NFL's rules on alternate uniforms?
As per NFL regulations, teams are permitted to wear alternate or throwback uniforms only three times each season. This fall, the league broadened its alternate uniform guidelines to include a third alternative helmet, although this does not necessarily pertain to the Chiefs. Unlike other teams, the Chiefs lack a genuine throwback helmet or uniform that would necessitate an alternate helmet. The last time they donned their Dallas Texans throwback helmet was during the 2009 NFL season, which marked the 50th anniversary of the AFL.
With the Chiefs selecting the white-on-white uniform combination for Week 3 vs. the Falcons, they'll have just one more opportunity to wear alternate uniforms this year. They've yet to wear their red-on-red alternates. They typically reserve alternates for prime-time games, but they won't have another one of those during the NFL's regular season. It's possible they could break out another alternate uniform for the right postseason matchup.
