The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that defensive tackle Mike Pennel is questionable to return to the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a hamstring injury.
Losing Pennel is a blow not only because he's a solid player, but because star defensive tackle Chris Jones is not playing today due to a calf injury. Pennel does a great job against the run and getting a push up the middle to open things up for other Chiefs pass rusher.
Kansas City is now down to Tershawn Wharton, Derrick Nnadi, and Marlon Tuipulotu at the defensive tackle position. Wharton is having perhaps the best season of his career with 26 tackles and 5.5 sacks, and the Chiefs are now banking on him to have a big second half.
Nnadi, like Pennel, is a force against the run and consuming space in the middle of the line of scrimmage. Tuipulotu is making his season debut for the Chiefs, so perhaps his fresh legs will pay dividends for the defense. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo may need to get creative blitzing, which fortunately is his specialty. The Chiefs recorded two sacks during the first half, one by Mike Danna and the other from George Karlaftis.
*Update* – Pennel has returned to the game.
