No one pictured Nick Chubb’s return to the field for the Cleveland Browns to last just eight games in 2024 before he suffered another major injury in Sunday’s loss.
Chubb broke his foot during the 21-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15. It was the end of a season that didn’t go as planned for Chubb, who hadn’t quite looked like his old self yet since returning.
With Chubb scheduled to be a free agent following the season, his future in Cleveland is very cloudy. One Browns Pro Bowler made a bold statement on Chubb’s future with the team.
"If Nick Chubb wants to be a Brown, he'll be a Brown next year,” Joel Bitonio said following loss No. 11 for Cleveland. “That's all I got for that. He's earned that, and they'll figure something out."
Bitonio has been around longer than anyone else in the locker room and his word should matter a bit to the organization. He has seen firsthand the impact that Chubb has had on the organization. Chubb is easily the biggest fan favorite the franchise has seen in the last couple of decades since turning to Cleveland.
Chubb finishes the season with 332 rushing yards and three touchdowns in eight games. The 3.3 yards per carry is a career-low for the Pro Bowl running back. Chubb did not have the same explosiveness this season, but it is not the same offensive line he is used to running behind either.
“I’ve told you guys this before, but I have gotten to have a first-row seat to what he’s been able to do. I can’t tell you how much I respect him as a person, and what he means to this football team,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said Sunday. “So, really, really disappointed about this injury. It does not change the fact that he continues to inspire this football team with how he approaches every single day. And I know this is just another obstacle that he will overcome.”
Cleveland will have a choice to make in the offseason on Chubb. Perhaps bringing him back on a one-year deal makes sense for both sides. Chubb has crossed 1,000 yards four times and finished just under it as a rookie. In all, Chubb has almost 7,000 yards rushing in Cleveland.
He has given the Browns one of the best running backs in the NFL since they selected him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Bitonio wants Chubb to stick around it appears, we will see if the front office can make that happen.
Nick Chubb’s injury shows the Browns have lost much more than just a game vs. the Chiefs
Worst outcome for the Browns.
