During the Los Angeles Chargers' 40-7 victory over the New England Patriots on Saturday, Justin Herbert set the NFL record for the most passing yards by a quarterback in his first five seasons.
Herbert was on his A-game against the Patriots, throwing for 281 yards and three touchdowns. He now has 20,747 passing yards for his career with one more game to go this season. Herbert passed Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, who previously held the record with 20,618 yards.
Statistically speaking, Herbert has accomplished just about everything a player can during a five-year span. Now, he'll focus on getting some postseason wins under his belt and making a run at a Super Bowl. With their win over New England, the Chargers clinched their first playoff berth since 2022.
In the only playoff game of Herbert's career, Los Angeles lost a heartbreaker to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2022 wild-card round, blowing a 27-0 lead. He now has the opportunity to get the bad taste of that loss out of his mouth and forge a new postseason legacy alongside coach Jim Harbaugh.
In his first season with the Chargers, Harbaugh has changed the culture of the team. They are no longer losing games in senseless ways and are playing physical, disciplined football. If Herbert can start having consistent postseason success as he enters the second half of his career, he will build a Hall of Fame resume for himself.

When the offseason arrives, the Chargers will have several different positions they need to prioritize upgrading, either through free agency, trade, and/or the NFL Draft. A big […]
