Last season, the San Francisco 49ers headed into the playoffs as the NFC's one seed.
On Sunday, with their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, the 49ers could be eliminated from having the chance to earn the sole first-round bye in their conference.
The 49ers, last in NFC West with a 5-6 record after losing 38-10 to the Green Bay Packers in Week 12, will be eliminated from the one seed if they lose to the Buffalo Bills and one of the Packers, Detroit Lions or Minnesota Vikings claims victory.
Detroit is hosting the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving, when the Packers welcome the Miami Dolphins to Lambeau Field.
On Sunday, the Vikings take on the Arizona Cardinals. While a win for Minnesota would be damaging in terms of the one seed, it is the outcome the Niners will be rooting for given they are only a game back of the Cardinals in the battle for the NFC West.
With the 49ers underdogs in Buffalo and all three of those NFC North teams favored to prevail, the odds say the Niners will be eliminated from the one seed on Sunday.
Their realistic hopes of finishing the regular season as the best in their conference dissipated a while ago, but the fact the 49ers could be officially out of the running in that regard in Week 13 is a reflection of just how disappointing a year it has been for a perennial contender.
