The Buffalo Bills have been battling injuries at key positions for much of the season, but coming out of their bye week, it looks as though the team's health is trending in the right direction.

After opening the practice window for linebacker Matt Milano in his return from the torn biceps injury that he sustained in training camp before the bye, head coach Sean McDermott provided an encouraging update ahead of the Sunday Night Football matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

According to McDermott, Milano has a chance of playing this week. His work in practice on Wednesday certainly looks like someone that at least has a shot of suiting up.

"Probably what you would expect just in terms of getting back in the flow. Endurance, you know, because he hasn't played football in quite some time, so really just trying to take it one day at a time, one play at a time — not to sound like it's coach speak, but that's really what we're looking at," McDermott said when asked what he would want to see from Milano in practice this week.

When asked in follow up if Milano has a chance to play on Sunday, the answer was "We'll see." McDermott also mentioned that for anyone returning from injury, the plan will likely be to have them play on some sort of pitch count to ease them back into action.

There are certainly no guarantees that Milano will suit up against the 49ers, and with the way linebacker Dorian Williams has played in his stead, there isn't a need to rush him back. Buffalo will be smart with their star linebacker.

San Francisco has injuries of their own. Last week, the 49ers were without quarterback Brock Purdy and left tackle Trent Williams due to injuries that have them very much in question for this week as well. Their status might have some say in what the Bills plan to do with Milano. If Purdy isn't able to go, it would make it that much easier to sit Milano down for one more week of recovery before their matchup in Los Angeles against the Rams.
