The New York Jets have placed wide receiver Allen Lazard on injured reserve on Thursday because of a chest injury. It means Lazard will be out for at least four games — Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, and Seattle Seahawks.
Last year's free agente addition will only be back in week 14, when the Jets face the Miami Dolphins in Florida.
This is a bummer for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has a long track record of a solid connection with Allen Lazard since their Green Bay Packers days. Lazard is third in targets, behind Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall, second in receiving yards, first in receiving touchdowns, and second in average of yards per reception.
Trade deadline coming
The New York Jets are reportedly considering a scenario where they trade away wide receiver Mike Williams, and trade rumors have circulated since the Jets acquired Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders.
However, with Lazard out for four games, general manager Joe Douglas' approach might change ahead of Tuesday's deadline. Mike Williams becomes a clear best option to be WR3, behind Adams and Wilson.
If Williams is traded, the WR3 options would be youngsters Xavier Gipson and Malachi Corley, who have combined for only eight targets and five receptions so far this season.
Situation
Allen Lazard signed a four-year, $44 million contract with the Jets last offseason, during the team's process to acquire Aaron Rodgers from the Packers.
Without Rodgers, though, he had a tough season in 2023, finishing with only 23 receptions for 311 yards. This year, with Rodgers back, Lazard's performance has been much more impactful for the Jets. He had 30 receptions for 412 yards and five touchdowns in seven games.
Lazard is slated to make $11 million in each of the next two seasons, but the Jets have a realistic window to release him next year.
