The month of September went as well for the Tennessee Vols as any UT fan could've hoped.

Tennessee cruised in tune-up games against Chattanooga and Kent State. And they blew out NC State in Charlotte.

The Vols' biggest test of the month came in an emotional road game against Oklahoma. Tennessee beat the Sooners 25-15 in Josh Heupel's return to Norman, putting an end (for now) to the narrative that the Volunteers can't win on the road in hostile environments.

After their solid start to the season, the Vols were named by 247Sports as one of September's 10 most impressive teams.

From 247Sports: Tennessee's offense is sexy, but the true beauty contest winner for Josh Heupel this season has been his defense. The Vols are playing lights out within the front seven and owning the line of scrimmage. That was a question coming into the season given Tennessee's perceived infatuation with the other side of the football. After lighting up Chattanooga and NC State to open, the Vols mercy-ruled Kent State before stepping off the gas early during a win at Oklahoma. The Vols pass the eye rest as a playoff contender.

Tennessee is undoubtedly a national championship contender after the way they played the first month of the season. But they have several difficult challenges ahead. A matchup against Alabama looks a little tougher than expected after the Crimson Tide's win against Georgia. And speaking of Georgia, the Vols will travel to Athens in November for a showdown with the Bulldogs.

Matchups against Arkansas, Florida, and a suddenly tough-looking Kentucky squad also loom.

The Vols are right what they want to be, but they still have a lot to prove this season.
