Texas coach Steve Sarkisian understands the importance of keeping starting quarterback Quinn Ewers in the game as long as possible.

So when Ewers returns, which is likely on Oct. 12 against Oklahoma, the coach isn’t going to have a package of plays for backup Arch Manning. You know, just in case.

“I’ve got respect for a guy who’s the starting quarterback and the rhythm that’s needed to play,” Sarkisian said Wednesday on the SEC coaches’ teleconference. “So no, that’s not something I've ever entertained.”

In short, when Ewers does return, it’ll be his show for the second-ranked Longhorns (5-0, 1-0 SEC).

Sarkisian hinted after the Louisiana-Monroe game that he expected Ewers to return against OU. Then, Orangebloods reported that sources inside the football building said that Ewers will take first-team practice repetitions next week. Ewers was practicing last week leading up to the Mississippi State game but on a limited basis.

All signs point to Ewers starting against the Sooners. But it’s yet another reminder of the luxury the Longhorns have with two starter-level quarterbacks in Ewers and Manning.

Sarkisian told reporters about how during his playing days at BYU, “I never wanted the backup to come in the game. Even for a play.”

Ewers was forced out in the third game this season with an abdominal strain. Manning entered the huddle and scored two touchdowns on his first three offensive plays. Royal-Memorial Stadium was practically set on fire as Texas went on to win 59-7.

Manning mania kicked into overdrive the following week, and the backup had another predictably strong performance against ULM. Manning carried the Horns against the Bulldogs in their SEC opener.

But all the while, Sarkisian left no doubt who he considered the starter and, for now, who was the backup.

The Longhorns have the weekend off and will return to practice Monday.
