Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is headed to Injured Reserve as he is set to receive season-ending surgery tomorrow in New York.

The surgery is aimed to fix Prescott's partially torn hamstring, an injury he suffered in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons. The Cowboys quarterback wasn't placed on IR last week as he sought out additional opinions to avoid season-ending injury.

However, expectations were always for Prescott to land on IR. The latest news only confirms the suspicion.

With that being said, one can argue the tough news might’ve saved the Cowboys from making a costly mistake. It appears they were willing to allow Prescott to return even if the season was a lost cause.

After all, Prescott, who had already been recommended by team doctors to undergo surgery, wasn’t placed on IR before the Cowboys played the Philadelphia Eagles despite the team already being at 3-5. That’s despite public comments of Prescott’s injury requiring a long time to rehab from even if he didn’t go to IR.

Instead, they allowed Prescott to go to the last resort before making a decision.

Risking Prescott to re-injure his hamstring could’ve proved costly even for the 2025 NFL season. What would the Cowboys have to gain had he returned in say, Week 15 or 16? Following his injury, the team’s playoff chances were already around the 3% mark.

It is what it is in the NFL. The Cowboys should focus in 2025 and Prescott requiring season-ending surgery might’ve saved them from themselves if the intention was to allow him to touch the field again this year.
